Are You Ready? Here's Your Last Social Challenge!

Looking for a way to make healthy eating a whole lot easier? Try meal prepping! Not only can meal prepping help you maintain portion control, but research also shows that individuals who spend more time on food preparation have higher diet quality, including greater consumption of vegetables, salads, and fruits. (1)

A few tips to get started –
  1. Make a meal plan ahead of time – don’t be afraid to use social media (for ex: Pinterest) for meal prep ideas!
  2. When you get home from the grocery store, process your fruits and veggies right away so everything’s already prepared when you’re ready to cook.
  3. Beware of fatigue – switch up your recipes to keep your meals fun and enjoyable. You can always freeze meals for later consumption.

YOUR CHALLENGE:
This week's challenge is to prep your meals for at least two days this week. Oatmeal jars for breakfast, couscous and chicken for lunch, or a veggie dipping plate for a snack – let your creativity roam with this one!

To enter Week 4's Challenge, submit your meal prep photo to GetFitSD@SDChamber.org by Monday, February 6 at 11:59 A.M. The winners will be announced via email, on the website, and within the Get Fit dashboard.

Good luck!

Last Week's Challenge Winners:

Thank you to everyone that submitted photos for the Week 3 Challenge!

This was another tough decision, but a big congratulations goes to Team Anderson, represented by the Office of Senator Joel Anderson (CA-38), for their paw-sitively adorable workout buddy photo.

We're Halfway! Here's Your Third Challenge...

We're about halfway through our 30-Day Challenge, which means motivation is needed now more than ever.

Are you having a hard time sticking with your fitness goals? Try grabbing a buddy to help you stay accountable! Research shows that exercising with a partner can increase your likelihood of sticking to a workout program. And, having a buddy may also encourage you to exercise for longer periods of time1.

YOUR CHALLENGE:
This week's challenge is to find a workout buddy (a coworker, neighbor, best friend, or even your "paw" pal) and start getting fit together. Working out doesn’t have to be lonely!

To enter Week 3's Challenge, submit your buddy photo to GetFitSD@SDChamber.org by Monday, January 30, 11:59 A.M. The winners will be announced via email, on the website, and within the Get Fit dashboard.

Good luck!

Thank you to everyone that submitted photos for the Week 2 Challenge!

This was a tough decision, but a big congratulations goes to the Las Cucarachas team (Center for Sustainable Energy) for their "desert" lunch photo. Very unconventional, indeed!

Challenge No. 2: Let Nature Take Its Course

Before we jump into this week's challenge - a few reminders:

  • Today is the last day to activate your Get Fit Dashboards! If you have less than five people activated on your team, please visit the Get Fit website here for instructions on how to get activated.

  • Mark your calendars! The Get Fit Celebration Mixer is Wednesday, February 15, 5:30 - 7:30 PM at the AquaVie Spa & Wellness Center. All Challengers can register for free by emailing kkalonji@sdchamber.org.

  • Don't forget to bookmark login.getfitsd.org for easy access to the Dashboard or download the DailyEndorphin app to log your activities using your smartphone device. (Android | iPhone)

And now for your regularly scheduled programming....

Did you know that 90 percent of all doctors' office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints, and 43 percent of all adults suffer from adverse health effects due to stress???1

Yet, never fear - nature is here! Research shows that a simple 15-minute walk in nature can decrease up to 16 percent of the stress hormone, cortisol, and it can also reduce your heart rate by up to 4 percent.2 Even looking at pictures of nature for an extended period of time can help reduce stress!

YOUR CHALLENGE:
Skip the office lunch in front of your computer and explore the outdoors! If it’s too cold outside, try a conference room. This week’s challenge is to eat your lunch in an unconventional setting and take the time to let the food digest. To spice it up, invite your coworkers and turn lunch into an informal meeting or just a hangout!

To enter Week 2's Challenge, submit your lunch photo to GetFitSD@SDChamber.org by Monday, January 23, 11:59 A.M. The winners will be announced via email, on the website, and within the Get Fit dashboard.

Good luck!

Challenge No. 1 - Set Your Goals

1/10/2017

Nearly everyone who has ever set a fitness New Year's resolution knows sticking to health goals can be tough. But, research shows that specific, concrete goals are the difference between success and failure when aspiring to fulfill personal objectives.

A 2011 meta-analysis* of 38 group goal studies revealed three key characteristics of performance-enhancing goals:
  • Specific - Goals that are specific have a higher likelihood of getting accomplished. "I want to exercise at least four times per week," is far better than "I'd like to be more physically active." The measurability and time-sensitivity of the former statement make the goal much easier to achieve.

  • Difficult - The more challenging a goal is, the more effort you will put in. But, don't get crazy! If a goal is too difficult and not attainable, it can negatively affect your performance.

  • Group-centric - Researchers found that "egocentric" individual goals, aimed at maximizing individual performance, yielded a  negative performance effect.

So, instead of, "I want to exercise four times a week so I can look awesome on my next beach trip," a better example is: "I want to exercise four times a week so it's easier for me to be active with my children," or "I really want to exercise at least four times per week so I can help my team win the Get Fit Challenge!"

YOUR CHALLENGE:
Now, it's your turn! Use our worksheet to set 1-3 goals for the 30-Day Challenge and map the steps you will take to achieve them. But, don't forget to show off - the teams and individuals that illustrate one Challenge goal in the most creative way will win this week's social challenge.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box! Are you shooting for 8 hours of sleep per night during the Challenge? Show us a funny picture of you (or your team) catching some z's! Is your goal to complete a triathlon before the end of the Challenge? Show us what it will look like when you cross the finish line!

To enter, submit a photo to GetFitSD@SDChamber.org by Tuesday, January 17, 11:59 A.M. The winners will be announced via email, on the website, and within the Get Fit dashboard.

Good luck!
